FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Northfield, Minn. (September 19, 2008) – The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM) has given Grace University Lutheran Church a 2008 Minnesota Preservation Award. This award recognizes the skill and historic sensitivity Miller Dunwiddie applied in the addition and renovation to this Gothic Revival style church. Built between 1915 and 1917 near the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis campus, the restoration expands the building to meet the needs of a growing congregation.
The story of this project began in 1997 when Miller Dunwiddie was hired to prepare a comprehensive preservation and implementation strategy for the church. After assessing the congregation's needs, a multi-phased plan was created. This plan included defining a necessary property expansion; negotiating the purchase of land; renovating the existing nursery and community hall; upgrading HVAC systems; and creating an office, kitchen, and classroom addition. Grace University Church conducted their financial campaign, purchased the needed property, and began construction in 2004. The project finished in April of 2005.
PAM is the only statewide, private, non-profit organization advocating the preservation of Minnesota's historic resources. Each year, PAM bestows preservation awards to recognize outstanding individuals, organizations, and projects that exemplify the Alliance's mission of preserving, protecting, and promoting Minnesota's historic resources.
