Public Safety Facility – Eastern Iowa Airport

Cedar Rapids, IA

Safety Hub

The Public Safety Facility at the Eastern Iowa Airport is used by the police, fire, and rescue staff tasked with handling safety and traffic issues at this regional airport. They needed a highly functional, highly flexible workspace that would enable them to execute their urgent duties with great efficiency. The facility includes four apparatus bays, public safety offices, and living quarters for firefighters. People and equipment need to move quickly through the space so we planned an efficient layout that partitioned office and living areas. With longevity in mind, we specified durable materials and dependable, high-performance systems, including a geothermal heat pump system for heating and cooling. These decisions minimize future operation and maintenance costs. The building does its job well: It enables those who work there to deliver exceptional —at times, heroic — service.
