In 2000, Miller Dunwiddie prepared a preservation master plan for Scoville Hall. When
originally built in 1896, Scoville Hall was Carleton College’s library. It was extensively
renovated in the 1950s and eventually converted into classrooms and faculty offices when
a new library was constructed in the 1970s.
Our preservation master plan included an assessment of the exterior envelope (masonry,
roofing, windows, and skylights), an exterior and interior accessibility assessment, fire
and life safety improvements, and options for interior renovations. As a result, phase one
improvements included structural reinforcement of the roof rafters; the addition of
insulation to the attic; replacement of the skylight, 100+ year-old roof slate, and
decorative metal flashings and caps; and cleaning, repair, and repointing of the masonry
wall surfaces. Future phases will include accessibility and fire and life safety upgrades,
window replacement, and interior renovations.
