The Eastern Iowa Airport serves a wide region throughout Iowa, connecting to major transportation hubs across the country. A new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting/Public Safety Facility was needed to handle growing traffic and safety needs. The new facility houses Public Safety staff that are cross-trained for both fire/rescue and police functions. The 19,000 square feet of space includes apparatus bays, living quarters, public safety offices, fitness facilities, and a flexible training/conference room.
The layout is designed to be compact and efficient to facilitate fast response time to the apparatus bays from all areas. Both the interior and exterior utilize durable, low maintenance materials that will provide years of service. The project includes a geothermal heat pump system and a high reflectance roof system to reduce long term operating costs. All these features will contribute to the sustainability of the building. Completion is scheduled for December of 2009.
