Miller Dunwiddie's work on the Gale Woods Farm began with a feasibility study of the 14 existing buildings within the park. Of these buildings, MDA determined that the barn and house could be renovated. We worked with the Three Rivers Park District to provide educational programs and public interaction with livestock. An amphitheater, machine shed, compost shelter, and toilet annex were added to support these activities. The house was modified for use by staff and the public, incorporating a small gathering room on the first level and offices on the lower level. A pavilion further expanded the park's outreach by providing rental and programming opportunities.
The second phase of the education center adds to the existing barn. The primary components of the addition include classrooms for public programming, farm produce display, and sales. The design creates a strongly integrated indoor/outdoor relationship in order to foster a connection between the user and the natural/agricultural environment. The addition is designed to meet the Minnesota Sustainable Building Design Guidelines (B3). All aspects of the facility from the thermal performance of the envelope to the use of regionally available materials emphasize this environmentally responsible approach.
