St. Paul, MN
Miller Dunwiddie led a team of architects and engineers to prepare a
1997 master plan study for the restoration of the Cathedral of Saint
Paul, in Saint Paul, MN. The study identified the exterior restoration
as the highest priority.
The restoration began with a complete investigation of the exterior to
identify original materials and assemblies, and to determine their
functional status. The overall approach was to preserve as much of the
historic fabric as possible and to utilize preservation procedures that
had the least detrimental effect on those materials. The project
introduced non-visible elements that reduce maintenance and extend the
useful life of the Cathedral’s exterior.
In addition to the exterior restoration, the project included new
electrical and heating infrastructure, new interior lighting,
re-landscaping of the site, and a new donor’s chapel.
