North St. Paul, MN
Miller Dunwiddie helped the Church of St. Peter to assess and plan for the long range needs of their parish and school. We combined our extensive master planning experience with participation and feedback from church parishioners. The resulting design utilizes the existing church as a daily chapel, gathering space and processional entrance. The addition of a 1200 seat, traditional-style basilican church provides room for expected growth. The site was designed with many low impact stormwater strategies, including pervious asphalt and rain gardens. The Ramsey County Watershed District helped fund these strategies and worked with the parish elementary school to design and install a butterfly / rain garden space. The Watershed District has utilized the St. Peter site as an example for other institutions to follow.
The church broke ground in June 2007 and was completed in August 2008. During construction we continued to use our design skills. When several historic liturgical items unexpectedly became available, we integrated them with the building to further enhance the worship experience.
